Abortion pills give us back the opportunity to control our lives at the most basic level:
our bodies, our families, and our life's path.
Abortion pills are 95% effective, and serious complications occur in less than 0.4% of patients who use it as intended. Abortion pills are safer then Viagra, penicillin, and even Tylenol.
However, FDA requirements on abortion medication, mifepristone, have long harmed patients’ health by delaying or blocking access to medication abortion, with no corresponding health benefit. There’s no reason to require pregnant people to travel to certain providers for consultation. Instead, any doctor should be able to write a prescription for this FDA-approved safe medication to be filled at a local pharmacy or delivered in the mail from an online pharmacy.
Leading medical groups, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and health advocacy groups, have long called for these restrictions to be lifted. Let’s join them! Send your message to the President Biden: improve access to safe abortion medication now.
(Although you may have read about the FDA lifting its restriction on mifepristone temporarily during COVID, we are seeking a permanent fix.)
Petition to Commissioner Woodcock
TO: Dr. Janet Woodcock, Acting U.S. Commissioner of Food and Drugs
Science, not politics, should determine policy around time-sensitive and essential health care like abortion.
Please permanently allow mifepristone to be made available in retail pharmacies like other prescription drugs and without unique provider certification or patient consent requirements. The FDA recently lifted its in-person requirements mifepristone during the COVID public health emergency; you need to make this welcome change permanent.
